1. Pick a cigar that is forgiving.

Your first cigar should be mild to medium in body. Strong cigars hit too hard for the unaccustomed palate — they will not feel like a treat, they will feel like a punishment. Save them for later. The names we hand to newcomers most often at our humidor in Webster:

• Macanudo Café — Dominican, mild, Connecticut wrapper. The textbook starter cigar.
• Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real — Dominican, mild to medium. Smooth, slightly sweet.

• Padron 3000 series — Nicaraguan, medium. Step up when you are ready for more body.

2. Cut it the right amount.

Most cigars come with the closed end — the cap — intact. You need to remove a small portion, about 2–3 millimeters. Cut too little and the draw is tight; cut too much and the wrapper unravels. Three common cuts:

• Guillotine — a clean horizontal cut. The default for most smokers.
• V-cut — a wedge. Concentrates the draw, easier first puff.
• Punch — a small round hole. Forgiving, fewer loose tobacco bits.

3. Light it slowly.

Hold the flame about a centimeter below the foot (the open end). Rotate the cigar constantly so heat distributes evenly across the entire face. The goal is an even, glowing ring of tobacco — not a half-lit, charred mess.

Use a butane lighter or a wooden match. Avoid a Zippo — its lighter fluid leaves an oily aftertaste in the first puffs. Soft-flame butane is the gentle option; a torch is faster but harsher.

4. Sip, do not inhale.

Cigar smoke stays in your mouth. Draw, hold the smoke for a moment, then exhale. Pulling the smoke into your lungs is unpleasant and unnecessary — the flavor lives in your mouth, nose, and the slow exhale.

Pace yourself. A draw every 30 to 60 seconds is right. Faster and the cigar burns hot and bitter. Slower and it goes out.

5. Pair it with the right drink.

The traditional pairings work because they share or contrast with the cigar's notes without overwhelming them:

• Black coffee or espresso — bitter and warm, complements milder cigars.
• Bourbon, rye, or single malt — sweetness and oak frame medium-bodied cigars beautifully.
• Aged rum or port — for fuller, sweeter Nicaraguans.

Skip the sugary mixers — they fight the cigar instead of complementing it. Cigar Heaven does not serve alcohol or food, so bring nothing or grab a coffee at the counter.

6. How long it lasts.

A robusto runs 30 to 45 minutes. A toro 60 to 90. A churchill or double corona can stretch past two hours. Plan accordingly — your first cigar deserves an evening, not a quick in-and-out. Settle into a seat in the lounge, put a game on the TV, and let it last.

7. If it goes out.

It happens. If you have been away under five minutes, gently re-light — tap the ash off first, then warm the foot evenly. After fifteen minutes, the cigar has cooled too much; you will get a stale, harsh smoke. Save it as a learning lesson and pick a fresh one next visit.
